West Horsley has its own doctor’s surgery, post office and several local shops including Surrey’s oldest butcher’s and The Crossroads Local Store which sells cheese, wines, beers and spirits, fresh flowers, provisions and baked goods. There’s an excellent choice of pubs and restaurants if you’re eating out locally including The King William IV and The Barley Mow in West Horsley, The Duke of Wellington in East Horsley and The Clandon Arms in West Clandon – and there are plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants on hand in both Guildford and Leatherhead.
This is the ideal location for anyone who likes to be outdoors, exploring the countryside on foot or by bike. With open countryside to the east and west and a Conservation Area to the south of the Epsom Road, West Horsley is set on the edge of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Here you’ll find Box Hill, which offers panoramic views of the most glorious countryside and the woodland walks and waterfall at Newlands Corner. A number of public and permissive footpaths cross land belonging to West Horsley Place and, of course, there’s the National Trust’s Hatchlands Park in the neighbouring village of East Clandon. Just a short distance up the A3 you'll discover the Royal Horticultural Society’s flagship garden, described as one of the ‘great gardens of the world.’
Hatchlands Park isn’t the only historic property in the area. Nearby Polesden Lacey, managed by the National Trust, provides measured walks around the 1600-acre estate and an historic house which offers a fascinating glimpse of Edwardian life. Loseley House, a fine example of Elizabethan architecture, lies just south of Guildford and whilst Clandon Park, a Palladian mansion, close to West Horsley, is currently undergoing restoration and conservation, it is open at various times throughout the year with gardens that are open to the public throughout the summer months.
Golfers will appreciate the choice of local courses including the Clandon Regis course in West Clandon, The Drift Golf Club in East Horsley. Both Guildford Golf Club and Effingham Golf Club have excellent reputations. There's a tennis club in East Horsley and a cricket club in Effingham but to work out in the gym, enjoy a fitness class or swim, Guildford is home to both the Spectrum Leisure Centre and The Surrey Sports Park.
Living in West Horsley, both Guildford and Leatherhead are easily accessible. The station in nearby Horsley provides regular services to both London and Guildford and the A3 is on hand for those travelling south to Portsmouth and the coast or northwards towards the M25 and London.
