With historic market towns, a bustling city packed full of history and heritage, wonderful open landscapes and riverside walks, Oxfordshire is a county where you can settle into a relaxed retirement or fill your days with activity. Located in the heart of England, Oxfordshire is bounded by the Cotswolds, the Chilterns and the Berkshire Downs and is one of the most beautiful of the English counties.
If you’re enjoying your retirement in Oxfordshire, a visit to Oxford – the city of dreaming spires – will surely be a regular event. There’s so much to see and do – with the Bodleian Library, Oxford Castle and plenty of museums including the Ashmolean, Natural History and Pitt Rivers Museums. Oxford is a city of theatres – with programmes of drama, music and dance. The Botanic Garden is the oldest of its kind in the world, founded in 1621 as a physic garden growing plants for medical research – and it’s a peaceful oasis in the city. Over recent months, the Oxfordshire Cotswolds have become particularly popular with retirement homebuyers. This isn’t surprising given the rich heritage of the area and the beautiful towns and villages of honey coloured stone. Burford, Chipping Norton, Witney and Woodstock all have plenty to offer: the latter is home to Blenheim Palace, built in the 18th century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Chiltern Hills, one of the South East’s finest landscapes and the Icknield Way, Shakespeare’s Way and the Oxfordshire Way are exceptionally beautiful walking routes. These trails may be accessed from Watlington which has its own ‘white mark’ a triangular mark carved into the hill and visible for miles around. The Cotswolds, with over 3,000 miles of footpaths and rights of way, provide wonderful walks and incredible views. Most towns and villages offer circular routes such as the lovely 5 mile walk through the stretch of the Windrush Valley between Burford and the Barringtons. Retirement should be a time to indulge your hobbies and if you enjoy golf, Oxfordshire offers a superb golfing experience with several championship courses. The Oxfordshire Golf Club, Heythrop Park Golf Course and Bicester Golf Course are all popular choices. With the River Thames running through the county, water sports abound at the Cotswold Water Park there are 150 lakes in 40 square miles – where you can enjoy watersports of all kinds.
One of the county’s most popular places to shop is Bicester Village, home to over 160 designer outlet stores. Westgate Oxford is a new shopping and leisure experience in the heart of Oxford with global brands, restaurants and cafes, a five-screen cinema, rooftop bars and dining. Oxford also has a covered market, trading since 1774 and just as popular today. For unique gifts, antiques or something special, Burford has a brilliant range of antique shops and independent retailers whilst historic Wallingford has a reputation for its specialist shops, arts and crafts, gifts and antiques stores.
