Located on the slope of the Chiltern Hills, midway between St Albans and Luton, Harpenden offers a perfect blend of town and country.
The town takes its name from the words ‘Herpe dene’ – or the ‘military path through the valley’ – from its location in a dry valley on a route used by Romans travelling to Verulamium (St Albans).
Today, Harpenden is a delightful, leafy, town with a pretty Georgian centre, cricket green, an excellent selection of upmarket High Street and independent shops along with art galleries and a host of places to eat, drink or meet friends for coffee.
The best retirement properties are in a location close to most of the local amenities, which is why Harpenden is an excellent place to call home when you're no longer working.
You’ll find everything you need in Harpenden including branches of Waitrose, Sainsbury’s and an M&S Simply Food, local bakeries and a family butcher.
Alongside numerous independent boutiques are familiar High Street names including a branch of COOK – and there’s a good choice of beauty salons and hairdressers. The town centre is also home to a branch of WH Smith, a post office and several banks.
If you enjoy keeping fit, or are simply looking to stay active in retirement, Harpenden has an array of options based on the activities you would like to do.
Local leisure facilities include Harpenden Leisure Centre, which has an impressive offering, including a gym, a 25m swimming pool, fitness studios and an impressive sports hall in which you can play badminton or table tennis.
Golf enthusiasts are also well catered for in Harpenden, as there is a choice of five courses, all within easy reach of the town.
If you're looking to simply enjoy the fresh air, Harpenden Common and Rothamsted Park offer acres of green space for walks - and of course, you're perfectly placed to explore the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
It is also important to consider nearby healthcare facilities, which makes Harpenden an excellent choice for retirees.
Healthwise, you'll be well catered for with two medical practices, three dental surgeries and two hospitals - Harpenden Memorial and Spire Harpenden - all within a mile of our Redclyffe Place development.
In the town centre, there are several pharmacies including Boots, several opticians and chiropractic centres.
