Moving from their beautiful North Cotswold home, with its glorious gardens, private landing strip and art studio was a difficult decision but necessary decision for David and Elizabeth Chalmers. When they discovered Beechcroft’s Cotswold Gate development in Burford, however, they realised that their idea of downsizing to a home that would be easier to maintain was not only possible, it could also be an attractive prospect.
Designed exclusively for the over 55s, Cotswold Gate is a collection of elegant, energy-efficient houses and apartments located on Shilton Road in Burford, less than a mile from Burford’s High Street. Homeowners have the use of a residents’ lounge and a menu of services available at the on-site care home and the new homes feature high quality fixtures and fittings, a terrace, balcony or private garden and allocated parking. The beautifully landscaped setting, as well as private gardens, are maintained by the development’s Estate Manager, who also takes responsibility for the cleaning and maintenance of the communal areas.
“We looked at several developments without much enthusiasm. They simply weren’t right for us but when we visited Cotswold Gate, we felt at home. We discovered the development almost by accident. It was a nice day and we decided to go over to the Cotswold Garden Company in Buford for coffee or lunch. I must have heard of Beechcroft because, before setting off, I made an appointment to view Cotswold Gate, which is just across the road from the Cotswold Garden Company.”

“Beechcroft’s sales consultant, Sandy, was really helpful and very welcoming and we established a good relationship with her from the start. She took us into the show home to view the model of the development; that was very useful because when we explained the type of home we were looking for, Sandy was able to indicate suitable properties using the model’s lighting system. She was then able to show us one of the three-bedroom apartments that was still under construction.”
“Really, there’s so much we like about Cotswold Gate. It’s all turned out better than we expected,” continues Mr Chalmers. “Our former home was crafted from Cotswold stone and, when we came here and discovered the homes have been built with lovely limestone, it was an added attraction. My wife hasn’t driven for years, so we needed to be near a bus stop and, of course, we are able to walk over to the Cotswold Garden Company. One of the biggest benefits for us, however, is having a care home on the development. Although my wife is a little younger, I am in my late 80s and have some health issues so if either of us need more care, there’s an absolutely lovely care home on hand.”
“We have also found the guest suite at Cotswold Gate to be very useful. Our youngest son lives in Nottingham and calls in to see us whenever he drives down to Reading for work. He always has to leave very early in the morning so if we book the guest suite, he is able to leave without disturbing us.”
For anyone interested in making the move to Cotswold Gate, two-bedroom apartments are currently priced from £350,000 and two-bedroom houses from £575,000. For further information click the button below and find your dream home at Cotswold Gate.
