  • 4 slices of cheddar or mild red Leicester cheese

Tip: Why not trying barbequing the burgers for a more intense flavour?

Method

  1. Form the Burgers: Divide the minced beef into four equal portions. Gently form each portion into a burger patty, about 1.5 cm thick and slightly wider than your burger buns. Use your thumb to make a small dimple in the centre of each patty; this prevents it from puffing up while cooking. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper.
  2. Cook the Burgers: Heat a large frying pan or grill over a high heat. Cook the burgers for 3-5 minutes per side for medium-rare, or longer for your desired doneness. For a truly delicious burger, try to only flip it once.
  3. Melt the Cheese: During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on top of each patty. Cover the pan or tent the burgers with foil to help the cheese melt perfectly.
  4. Toast the Buns: While the burgers are cooking, lightly toast the buns on the grill or in a separate pan until golden brown. This adds a nice crunch and prevents the bun from getting soggy.
  5. Assemble Your Burger: Place a piece of lettuce on the bottom bun, followed by the cheesy patty. Top with a slice of fresh tomato. Add any other desired toppings, and place the top bun on the burger.
  6. Serve and Enjoy: Serve immediately with your favourite sides, like chips or a salad.
