Whatever your taste or your budget, you can find somewhere to dine out in Windsor. From Michelin starred restaurants to smart restaurants and popular cafes, there’s plenty of choice in Windsor and the surrounding areas.
The Giggling Squid is a quirky restaurant that offers a feast for the eyes with bold interiors full of colour and florals and a menu of Thai tapas. It’s conveniently located next to the Theatre Royal and facing Windsor Castle – and just three minutes’ walk from the river. When it’s sunny, it’s possible to enjoy lunch on an outdoor table or Thai tapas al fresco or cocktails under the stars.
Another award-winning venue, the Fox & Hounds is supplied with meat from the Crowne Estate next door and fresh fish delivered straight from Cornwall. This is a restaurant that elevates pub classics.
Located on Thames Street, just a short walk from Windsor Castle, Honest Burgers is a friendly – and a dog-friendly – restaurant where you’re able to sit outside when the weather is fine. The restaurant boasts ‘proper burgers’ made with British beef. Meat is locally sourced and when you’re in Windsor, and only in Windsor, can you order the ‘Windsor Burger’ which is a moiuthwatering beef burger with Waterloo cheese, bacon, tarragon, miso butter, crispy onions, mushroom, sour cream, lettuce and beef jus mayo.
Located just 200 metres from Windsor Castle, A La Russe, as the name suggests is a restaurant serving modern French and World cuisine. The restaurant is open from Monday to Saturday, serving lunch from noon to 2.30 pm and dinner from 6 pm. There’s a fixed price two or three course lunch, a children’s menu and special events including a menu of French classics and live Jazz.
Walk over to Eton High Street, and you’ll find the Crown and Cushion, a building dating back to the 1600s which has been an inn since 1753. When the weather’s fine, you can eat or drink outside – or even order a takeaway to eat at home. The menu offers a full range from sandwiches and jacket potatoes to burgers, fish and chips, scampi and chips, risotto and lasagna.
Located on River Street, the Windsor Restaurant is The Real Greek’s first venue outside London. It has two floors with views towards the castle and the river where you’ll be able to enjoy a relaxed lunch or dinner. If you’re planning a party, you’ll be able to book the first floor. The food is inspired by the cuisine of the Eastern Mediterranean. There are gluten free and vegetarian options, Greek nibbles and cold mezze as well as a full menu.
Open seven days a week, The Greene Oak is a charming pub in Oakley Green. It’s a great place of a mid-week meal, a Sunday roast or Friday evening drinks on the terrace, weather permitting. There’s a range of wines, beers, cask ales and ciders – or cocktails if you prefer. The menu includes fish and chips, sea trout and mussels, partridge and pork chops, cheeseburgers, beef short rip, sirloin steaks, risottos and pies. There’s a special menu for younger diners.
This restaurant, in the countryside Old Windsor, was awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand award in 2024. This is one of restaurants by the award-winning Adam Handling who has been crowned Scottish Chef of the Year, British Culinary Federation’s Chef of the Year and Chef of the Year in the Food & Travel Awards. In 2023, he became BBC TV’s Great British Menu ‘Champion of the Champions.’ The menu is British pub food but with a ‘luxury approach’ showcasing the best of British produce. There’s a menu that changes regularly, delicious Sunday lunches, a room for private functions – and it’s dog friendly.
