Television property programmes often refer to ‘lifetime’ homes but, in reality, what we need from a home changes over time. This was certainly the case for Mrs Catherine Lane who spent 32 years living in a period cottage before moving to The Sidings, Beechcroft’s new retirement community in Wheatley.
Mrs Lane, who still works in education, first started to think about moving home about five years ago when the maintenance of her 300-year-old home and large garden began to be more of a chore than a pleasure. Finding the right property proved challenging; whilst she was ready to give up gardening, she still wanted a garden – and she preferred to remain in Wheatley where she’d lived for so many years.
“I am a practical person and realised I couldn’t stay in my cottage. There wasn’t a bathroom on the ground floor and the large garden required a great deal of maintenance,” comments Mrs Lane. “I wanted to stay in Wheatley: it’s really easy to get into Oxford, London and Heathrow from here, the village isn’t over-developed and there’s a good sense of community with lots of different types of people. When I was widowed, I looked at places around Oxford but couldn’t find anywhere I wanted to live.”
“I’m an active bell-ringer but there are many other activities and clubs for all ages in Wheatley, including The Wheatley Society, rambling groups and the local history archive. There is no excuse for feeling alone in this village. However, it is good to know that quiet moments of relaxation can be found by sitting amidst the roses in the pretty gardens of The Sidings.”
“As soon as I saw Beechcroft’s development on Station Road in Wheatley, I registered my interest and viewed the show flat, but I didn’t feel ready to move into an apartment. When the new show house was released for sale, I reserved it almost immediately, putting a deposit down straight away. I knew that if I didn’t go for it, I would miss out: it was a swift decision.”
Located on Station Road in Wheatley, The Sidings is an over 55s’ community comprising just 16 elegant, new, two-bedroom houses and two and three-bedroom apartments with allocated parking. The local shops and services are within easy reach and, as Mrs Lane can confirm, there are excellent transport links to Oxford and London.
Each new home has been designed to provide plenty of living space and either a terrace, balcony, Juliet balcony or private garden and the houses have sunrooms. Private gardens, as well as the beautifully landscaped communal grounds are maintained by an on-site Estate Manager.
Speaking of her new home, Mrs Lane says:
“I really liked the two-bedroom house I chose because of its position and also because it has a small garden. The house is spacious; there are many design features which I like. The rooms are of a good size, the staircase is wide and the landing is spacious which makes the house feel even bigger than it is. I was able to keep my furniture because my new home is as large as my former cottage but I took the opportunity to declutter and get rid of a lot of things I no longer wanted to ‘carry on my back’.”
Currently a trio of show homes are available to view at The Sidings, including a two-bedroom, ground floor apartment with private terrace, a first-floor apartment with two balconies and a two-bedroom house with sunroom, balcony and two terraces.
