Having lived in Abbots Langley for over 34 years, Peter and Diane Howarth decided that the time had come for the them to make a move and find a new home in which to spend their retirement. The couple have friends who have settled happily into life at Beechcroft’s Birch Place, an over 55s’ development in the heart of Berkhamsted and so when they visited the sales office and show home at Beechcroft’s Silversmith Place in Wallingford town centre, they knew what to expect.
“We decided that we would probably like to make the big move whilst we were still active and able to do so,” comments Mr Howarth. “We have family in nearby Cholsey but didn’t know Wallingford very well. We went into Wallingford to have a look at various places, saw the Beechcroft sign and, once we’d visited, made up our minds to buy almost immediately. We went across the road to the bank and arranged to pay the deposit straight away. We were a little concerned about selling our house and not having anywhere to move to but when the sale went through, we rented a property in Cholsey and are waiting for our new apartment to be completed so we can move in.”

“When we first looked around there were two apartments on sale, both with two bedrooms but neither was exactly what we were looking for but Beechcroft released two further apartments for sale and we chose one with an additional study which will be useful,” comments Mrs Howarth. “It has a balcony – and we will certainly be able to use the extra space.”
“I couldn’t stop smiling when I went to Wallingford,” says Mr Howarth. “It reminds me of a typical English village. The church is just across the road from the development and I am about to start singing with the church choir just as I did in Abbots Langley. People in Wallingford are very friendly, there’s plenty to do. We intend to join the local branch of the U3A as we were members of the U3A in Hertfordshire.
“There are also some lovely walks around Wallingford – and of course, there’s also the river,” adds Mrs Howarth.
“Leaving the village where we lived for 34 years was certainly a wrench but to move into a community like Wallingford is fantastic,” continues Mr Howarth. “We attended a drinks party organised by Beechcroft and met a lot of our new neighbours and prospective neighbours.”
“Beechcroft has the right sort of balance – living in a Beechcroft development, you are totally independent but have a community of like-minded people around you. All the people we have met are professional people – and, of course, we are right in the heart of Wallingford’s community as well.”
“There’s an estate management service which will be useful when we are away,” concludes Mr Howarth. “All in all, we think we’ve made the right decision and there are so many people of a similar age to us who have moved into apartments and everyone says it’s the best thing they’ve ever done.”
