A fresh start in Wallingford – with a new apartment and a roof terrace with views

Denis Smith has a long history with Wallingford – but he never thought he’d end up retiring to a new home in the heart of town.   As soon as retirement developer, Beechcroft, put the signs up outside Silversmith Place, Mr Smith registered his interest and has managed to secure a top floor apartment with a roof garden.  Now he’s living with his daughter and can’t wait for his new home to be completed.

Beechcroft’s new development for the over 55s comprises just 22 elegant two-bedroom apartments set on the first, second and third floors of a newly-constructed building between St Martin’s Street and Goldsmiths Lane in Wallingford.  The apartments overlook an attractive communal garden at first floor level and, on the ground floor, there’s allocated parking and two retail units. Lifts from the residents’ car park provide access to each floor.  With everything Wallingford has to offer literally on the doorstep– including the shops, restaurants, cinema, theatre, local church and riverside walks, this is an ideal retirement location.  It’s perfect for Mr Smith who has family living locally.

“As soon as I saw the signs go up, I decided to buy an apartment at Silversmith Place and everything has progressed from there,” comments Mr Smith.  “I was the Managing Director of an engineering firm in Reading so buying at the construction stage didn’t worry me at all.   Just by looking at the external brickwork, I can see that the development is being built well.”

“As a child, I lived in Hayes in Middlesex and we used to come to Wallingford on Sunday outings and when my wife and I were courting, it was one of the places we visited.  We never thought we’d end up living in Wallingford though.  We moved to Cholsey in 1965 and eleven years later bought a house in Wallingford and I have been there ever since.  Now, I’ve decided to downsize to an apartment as the house and the large garden took a lot of maintenance.”

Having been used to a large garden, Mr Smith was keen that his new home would have plenty of outside space and has chosen a top floor apartment with a roof terrace. He plans to make this into an attractive place to socialise – with garden furniture and potted plants.  He took some ‘bits and pieces’ from his former garden and when the time is right will put them in planters on his new roof terrace which will have far reaching views.

“I have seen photographs taken from the top of the building and I am looking forward to having some good views,” adds Mr Smith.  “I think that it may be possible to see about six churches from my roof terrace.”

Moving home hasn’t all been ‘plain sailing’ for Mr Smith, though.  The sale of his former home fell through whilst he was abroad and he had to put it back on the market – luckily, there were two potential purchasers and his sale to one of them completed without further problems.

“I am looking forward to a fresh start with brand new furniture,” adds Mr Smith.  I don’t think I’ll miss my old garden – the roof terrace will make up for that.  Beechcroft has organised some get togethers so that those of us who have bought apartments have been able to meet each other – and everyone seems very sociable.”

Mr Smith – and his new neighbours at Silversmith Place – will be able to relax and, if they choose ‘lock up and leave’ as the Estate Manager at Silversmith Place will be on hand to keep a watchful eye on properties whilst owners are away as well as to handle the day to day administration, cleaning and maintenance of the new development.

For further information on Silversmith Place, where prices start from £350,000 for a two-bedroom, second floor apartment with Juliet balcony, please contact Beechcroft’s sales team on 01491-832762.  The sales office and show home are open from Tuesday to Saturday inclusive, 10 am to 5 pm.  Details of all Beechcroft developments are available on the website at beechcroft.co.uk.
