A new apartment, close to her daughter, proves perfect for Jane Ramsbotham

When Mrs Jane Ramsbotham first visited Seymour Court, Beechcroft’s over 55s’ development in the heart of Thame, she met one of the new home owners who told her that moving there was the best thing he’d ever done.   Mrs Ramsbotham didn’t take him too seriously – but a few months later, she’s living at Seymour Court herself.

Located on Park Street, Seymour Court is a stylish development of just 21 elegant two and three-bedroom houses and apartments in a landscaped and fully-maintained setting within easy reach of the town’s shops and services.  The development has been created on the site of Thame’s former fire station and includes both new and converted homes.  All homes feature high-quality fixtures and fittings, are energy-efficient and easy to maintain and come with allocated parking.

At the time of her initial visit, Mrs Ramsbotham was living in a three-bedroom house in Daventry but, having been widowed, she wanted to move for practical reasons – and to be close to her daughter, as she explains:

“The journey to my daughter’s house in High Wycombe took about an hour and a quarter and she wanted me to be nearer to her.  My former home was also located on a nasty slope which was dangerous for me and for the car when the weather was icy.  When I started my search for a new home, I never thought I’d find anything I liked though.”

“I went to look at another retirement development near my daughter’s home but the windows were too small – and it wasn’t right for me.  My daughter suggested we go to look at the Beechcroft development in Thame, which wasn’t too far away – and she said that there were some apartments for sale there.”

“The ground floor apartment was close enough to the road for me to peek through the window - and the first thing I saw was a beautiful big kitchen, which was one of my priorities.”

“The apartment on the ground floor was available, the one above it had been sold and there was another available apartment on the top floor.  On our next visit to Seymour Court, we viewed the apartment on the top floor but it wasn’t exactly what I was looking for.  We also went to have a look at the ground floor apartment – and whilst I knew that I was going to like it, I wasn’t sure that I’d be able to afford it.  When we went in, it was so spacious and the kitchen was ideal.   My daughter and I went home and worked out my finances – and I was able to put my name down to buy it.   Luckily I sold my former home in Daventry and achieved the full asking price and everything went through fairly smoothly.”

Now Mrs Ramsbotham is living in a development with a community of like-minded people, has settled in well and is happy in her new home.  She moved into her apartment at the beginning of December and was invited to two pre-Christmas drinks parties which have helped her get to know her new neighbours.  She considers she has done well to buy a home at Seymour Court:

“My front door opens onto the road and I like this because it’s nice to see a bit of life – with people passing by.  I have a private patio where I’ll be able to sit in the summer and the journey to my daughter’s house is very easy – it only takes 22 minutes.  There is plenty to do in Thame;  Seymour Court is close to the shops, there’s a branch of the Women’s Institute and the U3A as well as bridge clubs.”

Mrs Ramsbotham and her neighbours have the benefit of an estate management service at Seymour Court.  An Estate Manager is on hand to organise the maintenance and cleaning of the communal areas and the gardening of both communal and private gardens and to keep an eye on properties whilst owners are away.

Although 75% of the new and converted homes at Seymour Court have already been sold, there is still a choice of two and three-bedroom houses and apartments available.  A two-bedroom, second-floor apartment with lift access is priced at £350,000, a two-bedroom converted house with private terrace is priced at £525,000 and a three-bedroom house with sun room, terrace and private garden is priced at £575,000.
