Having lived for 36 years in a family house in Purley on Thames, where they brought up three daughters, Pat and Michael Bennett decided the time had come to downsize – and Beechcroft’s Seymour Court in Thame has proved to be the perfect place.

One of the couple’s daughters lives in Australia and during a flight to visit her, Mrs Bennett was taken ill. As a result, she isn’t able to drive for another year. This really brought home the fact that the Bennetts would be better moving closer to local shops and services – as Mr Bennett explains:

“Where we lived before we needed to use the car to go to the doctors and the chemists. We realised that if neither of us could drive, we just couldn’t exist in our former home.”

Living at Seymour Court in Thame, we are able to walk to the shops, the banks, the doctor’s surgery and the chiropodists. Everything we need on a daily basis is on hand. It’s really convenient – and we don’t have far to go to the station.”

"Where we lived before there wasn’t a proper bus service into Reading but from Thame, we’re able to get into Oxford, High Wycombe and Aylesbury on the buses which are plentiful."

The Bennetts, however, didn’t discover Seymour Court themselves. One of their daughters, who lives locally, viewed it first and urged them to take a look.

“We didn’t know about Beechcroft, but our daughter said we had to go to Thame and view the new homes,” adds Mr Bennett. “We chose an apartment in a converted building, which has a small courtyard garden. It’s a lovely home with two bedrooms and good storage. Outside space is important to us although maintaining our former garden took a lot of time and effort."

The couple enjoy walking – and Thame is the perfect place to enjoy the outdoors.

“This is a great place for walking with the Phoenix Trail running between Thame and Princes Risborough,” comments Mrs Bennett. “I walked part of this trail and met several young mothers bringing their children home from school, which was lovely.”

The couple are looking forward to immersing themselves in local life which offers a whole range of activities as Mr Bennett explains:

“My wife is an enthusiastic flower arranger and I am sure she will link up with the local group once we have fully moved in. She also enjoys Scrabble and there is a local club for her to attend when she is ready to resume her interest. There’s also an amateur theatre which puts on shows in Thame.”

“Thame has a tennis and bowls club and, whilst tennis is beyond me now, I might satisfy a long-standing urge to see if I am any good at bowls. The Chinnor Rugby Union Club, promoted to the second tier of English rugby, play their home matches in Thame on Saturday afternoons.”

The Bennetts have already met other new owners at Seymour Court. In the summer, when they were sitting outside in their garden, people would stop and have a chat.

Mr and Mrs Bennett also took advantage of Beechcroft’s ‘Move With Us’ scheme which enabled them to reserve their chosen home before they sold their Purley on Thames property.

“The ‘Move With Us’ team helped sell our former house which saved us feeling unsettled,” comments Mr Bennett. “The team took over responsibility for marketing the property and it all worked out beautifully. We also had the assurance that Beechcroft wouldn’t sell our courtyard apartment to anyone else. It also meant that we didn’t need to put any pressure on the estate agent ourselves and we sold swiftly, almost achieving our asking price.”

The Bennetts like the fact that there is an Estate Manager on hand at Seymour Court.

“It’s useful to have an Estate Manager,” adds Mrs Bennett. “I look out and see him tidying up and keeping an eye on things and he has given us some useful advice.”
