Retirement for those of us over 55 today is very different to that of our parents or grandparents. Many of us are able to retire earlier, are in better health and are far more active than previous generations - and we are determined to make the most of our leisure time by owning second homes and holidaying in exotic locations. This is certainly the case for Angela and Ray Cox of St Albans whose new apartment at Beechcroft’s Maryland Place has given them peace of mind when they ‘lock up and leave’ to travel or spend time in their second home in Spain.
Located on Townsend Drive, in a peaceful landscaped setting approximately 15 minutes’ walk from St Albans city centre, Maryland Place is a collection of 35 elegant, newly built houses and apartments, designed exclusively for the over 55s. These energy-efficient and easily maintained new homes are set within mature, beautifully landscaped grounds and provide allocated parking and an estate management service.
“We were living in Harpenden when we saw an advertisement for Beechcroft’s Maryland Place,” says Angela Cox. “We hadn’t been looking for long and we weren’t really serious about our search but it had occurred to us that a lock up and leave apartment would be a good idea. We took early retirement whilst we were still youngish, my husband is now 61 and I’m 58, as we wanted to be able to travel, spend some time at our second home in Spain and quality time in St Albans.”
“Once we’d visited Maryland Place, we viewed a show home and felt very positive about the quality and location. We had certain criteria and decided pretty quickly that we wanted to buy the apartment that is now our home: it ticked almost all the boxes. Looking at the plans, we liked the layout of the apartment – it is on the top floor, the accommodation is very well proportioned with a south facing balcony. I never imagined that I would buy a new home off plan! In fact, it has worked out really well.”
“When we come home after spending time away, we don’t have anything to do and the estate management service is excellent – it means someone knows when we’re away. The Manager keeps an eye on our home and this gives us a sense of security.”
“St Albans is a great place to live – it’s not a large city but it’s very vibrant. There’s always something going on and there’s lots of places to eat and drink. There are two theatres and a fabulous cinema – The Odyssey - where you’re able to sit in a ‘normal’ seat or choose a private seat and have a meal and drink.”
“Verulamium Park is lovely. It’s possible to walk from the Roman ruins and the Verulamium Museum through the park to the Cathedral in the city centre. There’s a lot of things to do, so you’ll never get bored. There’s a market twice a week and there are frequent antiques or food markets on Sundays.”
