An easier lifestyle at The Farthings, Leatherhead for Diana and George Finch

When Diana Finch and her husband George moved from Epsom to Beechcroft’s The Farthings in Leatherhead, Mrs Finch expected it to be a ‘wrench’ – but, in fact, she hasn’t missed her former home at all.   Now settled in a stylish apartment, designed for the over 55s, the Finches are enjoying a much easier lifestyle.

“We lived in our former home in Epsom for 26 years but were finding it difficult to maintain our bungalow and a large garden,” comments Mrs Finch.  “We enjoy travel and go away as much as we can and it cost a fortune to keep the garden up to scratch.  I thought it would be difficult to leave Epsom where we had a lovely neighbour and, at first,  I wondered if we’d done the right thing but we haven’t missed it at all.”

The Finches first noticed advertisements for Beechcroft’s White Lion Place in Cobham and viewed two apartments they liked but which had already been sold.  It was a couple of years later when Mrs Finch saw the advertisement for The Farthings, Leatherhead in a newspaper and she, and her husband, headed straight over to Leatherhead.

The Farthings is an award-winning retirement community located just off Randalls Road, within easy reach of Leatherhead town centre and station.   Currently three elegant three-bedroom houses and just two luxurious three-bedroom apartments are available – with only five three-bedroom houses to be released.   Each house provides an abundance of living space including a drawing room with double doors to a dining room which, in turn, leads to a sunroom.   The houses offer plenty of outside space including a balcony to the master bedroom, a ground floor terrace and a private garden.

Each of the remaining first floor apartments features a spacious dining/hall – flexible space that is perfect for use as a dining room, study or a reception area.  The other rooms, opening off the central dining hall include a generously-proportioned drawing room which opens onto a balcony, a master bedroom with dressing area and en-suite with both bath and shower, a kitchen and utility room, a second bedroom adjacent to the separate shower room and a third bedroom/study.

“We nearly missed out on the apartments but, luckily, we had the choice of two.  The apartment we chose is lovely with a spacious dining/hall at the heart of the apartment.  I really like the fact that our apartment building is tucked away.   It is surprising quiet and peaceful here and the apartment is very warm and comfortable.”

At The Farthings, the estate management service will prove very useful for Mr and Mrs Finch, who travel abroad frequently.   The Estate Manager takes responsibility for the cleaning and maintenance of the communal areas and the upkeep of private gardens as well as the landscaped setting.   The Manager is also on hand to offer help and advice if needed.

“The estate management service is very good,” adds Mrs Finch.  “And The Farthings is very handy for Gatwick airport.  It’s a little bit nearer than Epsom, where we were before.”

Owners at The Farthings have the use of a communal lounge, to meet and socialise with neighbours and a guest suite that may be booked when friends and family come to stay.  A menu of additional services from hot daily meals to hairdressing and social events is available at the neighbouring care home.

“We didn’t know Leatherhead at all before.  We think it is very, very nice and go into town every morning.  There’s a branch of Waitrose and Sainsbury’s and lots more.  It’s easy to travel into Guildford, which is a very nice place to shop.  The private bus service will be useful for those who don’t drive and don’t want to walk into town,” says Mrs Finch.  “We have been over to the care home to see if we could have a lunch – which you need to book, and it will be very useful to have a hairdresser on hand.”
