There’s little doubt that Wallingford has plenty to offer. Amongst the top attractions listed on the popular website ‘Trip Advisor’ are Wallingford Museum described as ‘a treasure trove of local information and artefacts,’ The Corn Exchange, a ‘great local theatre – full of charm’ with a cinema, run by local volunteers and the ruined Wallingford Castle, where today’s visitors can enjoy a scenic, historical walk amidst beautifully landscaped gardens.

The development’s name was inspired by the silversmiths who worked at Wallingford’s mint, particularly those ‘moneyers’ who produced ‘long cross pennies.’ Until the middle of the 13th century, short cross pennies were in circulation – many of which were ‘clipped’ – an illegal practice which enabled the culprits to melt down the resulting slivers of silver. A great council, held at Oxford in 1246, resulted in the production of new coins marked with a ‘long cross’ which would extend to the edge of the coin and, in theory, prevent the coin being clipped. In practise, this wasn’t exactly the case but some of the new coins were minted in Wallingford by moneyers bearing the names Robert, Ricard, Clement and Alisandre in Wallingford.
The long cross pennies, such as the one found prior to development at Silversmith Place, are not ‘precious’ – but the apartments are extremely valuable for the over 55s – offering a relaxed way of life in a new home that requires little maintenance in a location where a car isn’t a necessity. Seven of the new homes have already been sold with a further nine reserved, leaving just six apartments available. Prices start from £350,000 for a two-bedroom apartment on the second floor with a Juliette balcony to £475,000 for a first floor apartment with two bedrooms, a study and two balconies.
