Looking to the future, Mike and Gillian Harding, were planning to move to Berkhamsted in around five years’ time – but reconsidered when they realised that retirement specialist, Beechcroft was creating Birch Place, a new over 55s development, on the site of Berkhamsted’s former police station.
“We live in a village with poor transport links and a steep hill and we planned to move to Berkhamsted in the future,” comments Mr Harding. “For the last couple of years, we have been keeping an eye on the local property market – and when Beechcroft’s Birch Place development in the heart of the Berkhamsted was announced, we realised that it was exactly what we wanted and advanced our plans by four or five years.”
Built on the site of the former police station on Berkhamsted High Street, Birch Place is a gated development comprising just 21 elegant two and three-bedroom apartments along with 2 three-bedroom houses, designed exclusively for the over 55s. Most of the new homes provide terraces and balconies as well as private parking and the fixtures and fittings are of the highest quality. There is lift access to all apartments and an estate management service to make life easier for those who live there.
“We were keen to reserve an apartment on the day of the sales launch at Birch Place so arrived at the sales office at about 8.30 am prepared to wait for 90 minutes until the opening time. We were surprised to find, however, that people had been queuing from around 6.30 am. One couple had even stayed in the hotel next door so that they would be sure of buying on the launch day. We were about ninth in the queue and Beechcroft only released 10 properties for sale at the first launch. Sadly, both the apartments we had ‘earmarked’ were reserved by the time our turn came.”
“We were looking for a three-bedroom apartment or, at least, a very large two-bedroom and were disappointed to have missed out on the apartments we were interested in. The following week, however, we were notified that the purchaser of one of the properties we wanted to buy was unable to proceed – and we were able to reserve it straight away."
“The apartment we have chosen has three bedrooms and an open plan living area. We aren’t really downsizing because although we live in a three-bedroom detached house, the floor area of our new apartment is slightly larger that of our current home. We also have a large garden but we aren’t gardeners and look forward to having less maintenance work, including the gardening, to do when we move to Birch Place."
“The location of Birch Place, in the High Street, is fantastic,” adds Mr Harding. “We are both still working. I work part-time locally and my wife works full-time in Barnet and it will be good to be able to enjoy more free time. We have a busy social life with more friends in Berkhamsted than in Tring. Having an estate management service means that we will be relieved of many of the pressures – and issues- related to management and maintenance, "
