Having lived in the same house for 37 years, Anne Ballinger and her husband decided that the time had come for them to downsize to a more manageable home. Their timing was excellent because leading retirement specialist, Beechcroft, was just beginning work on its new Birch Place development in the heart of Berkhamsted, about 10 miles from the Ballinger’s home.
Built on the site of the former police station in Berkhamsted High Street, Birch Place is a gated development of 21 elegant two and three-bedroom apartments, duplexes and penthouses along with 2 three-bedroom houses, designed exclusively for the over 55s. All the apartments provide lift access and most homes have terraces, balconies or roof terraces along with private parking.
“We first noticed Birch Place during the demolition stage, about 18 months ago,” comments Mrs Ballinger. “We’ve always liked Berkhamsted. It has a good range of shops and we love the cinema. There’s always a lot going on and we’d often thought that when we downsized we’d want to be near all the amenities. At some time, in the future, we may not be able to drive so we wanted a home near the centre of town with the station and everything on hand.”
As the Ballingers hadn’t seen any other Beechcroft developments, they visited Penhurst Gardens in Chipping Norton to see the show home and also attended the launch at White Lion Place in Cobham, Surrey. Impressed by what they saw, particularly the quality of the fixtures and fittings, they decided to make a move to Birch Place.
They attended the launch at Birch Place, when the 10 properties released for sale were all snapped up during the first few hours - and chose a three-bedroom apartment with a south-east facing balcony.
“We had thought about buying a house but decided that an apartment would be more secure when we travel,” adds Mrs Ballinger. “We also considered an apartment on a lower floor but we liked the layout of the apartment we eventually chose – and the fact that it uses the floor space efficiently.”
“We are looking forward to having an estate manager on hand when we move in. We have been living in an old property and the thought of not having to do the maintenance and the gardening is very appealing, particularly as we like to travel.”
Whilst the Ballingers will miss the friends they’ve made having spent almost four decades in the same house but, now they’ve almost finished sorting out their belongings, they’re looking forward to a new High Street lifestyle.
