Once a significant Saxon stronghold and home to an important castle and a Royal Mint, Wallingford is steeped in history. The ancient bridge, architectural gems and castle ruins bear witness to the town’s heritage but modern Wallingford has plenty to offer. At Farthing House, everything is literally ‘on the doorstep’ including retail outlets selling everything from clothes and shoes to gifts, jewellery, flowers, antiques and books. Waitrose is on hand along with a bakery, family butcher’s, specialist tea and coffee shop, Italian delicatessen and a wealth of places to eat including The Old Post Office, Pizza Express, Le Clos Wine Bar and Avanti, or just enjoy drinks with friends. There’s a good selection of hair and beauty salons along with opticians, pharmacies, two banks and a building society. Wallingford’s markets include the Friday Charter Market and Saturday’s Local Producers’ Market. Wallingford’s Corn Exchange Theatre and Cinema offer a full programme of live performance, art and the latest cinema releases. The local branch of the U3A organises a monthly programme of events including talks and outings.
